Did You Know?
Our founder, Prof. Ian Brighthope started his career as a young agricultural scientist in the 1960’s. He was involved in the design and implementation of field trials in animal nutrition, and saw how nutrition and supplementation was used routinely to improve health and productivity, as well as to treat illnesses, in farm animals.
As a medical student, Prof. Brighthope was amazed at how little formal training in nutrition he received. And as a young intern, one of the first patients that he saw was an elderly lady who had just had an operation for cancer and was eating ice cream and jelly. When he asked his professor of medicine about the rest of her diet, he was told it was irrelevant information.
Soon Prof. Brighthope became a committed designer of diets and prescriber of supplements in his practice, and was thrilled with the results his patients were achieving. But he continued to be troubled by quality issues in the products he was recommending. When retail tablets failed to dissolve and absorb, he decided that there must be a better way. "When I found an undigested tablet in a patient’s stool sample, I knew something was wrong", Prof. Brighthope said. "I had suspected some of the products my patients were using just weren’t working. When I analysed the products, I found they had too many binders, and not the therapeutic doses of the active substances claimed on the label."
Now the company that he founded, Nutrition Care Pharmaceuticals Pty Ltd, is at the fore-front of the practitioner market, and Prof. Brighthope has devoted his time to the development and training of natural health professionals of all backgrounds. He is the immediate past president of the Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine; which he held for 25 years, past chairman of the Australian College of Herbal Medicine, and a Founding Director of the Swinburne Graduate School of Integrative Medicine. Prof. Brighthope has continued his commitment to furthering complementary medicine, and works with naturopaths, doctors, pharmacists, chiropractors and other health professionals to help provide the best care for patients.
